Physiology


Introduction
  • Physiology is one of the strong foundation of the MBBS course, emphasizing the medical students about the normal functioning of various organs and how they maintain the normal Homeostasis within the body.
  • The Department of Physiology, Government Medical College Thiruvallur, is functional from February 2022. The Department of Physiology is currently headed by Prof.Dr.M.Anita,D.G.O,M.D., a senior resource person. The Department has efficient faculty comprising of One Associate Professor, two assistant Professors, two Senior Residents and Three Tutors to enable the students to achieve the academic excellence. They provide quality teaching to medical students, DRP PGs and allied health sciences. The academic activities consist of Large Group Teaching, Small Group Teaching, Self Directed Learning, AETCOM Modules, Seminars and Early Clinical Exposure.
  • The department is fully equipped with infrastructure to efficiently train the students in medical curriculum as well as research activities.

Infrastructure
  • Our department is highly equipped with state-of-the-art facilities like a fully furnished Hematology Laboratory, Clinical Laboratory, Amphibian Laboratory, Mammalian Laboratory, Demonstration Room and a Research Laboratory encompassing various equipment’s to conduct Clinical research.
  • The Department library has 94 Books with 57 titles and National and International journals which are utilized by the faculty, DRP PGs and UG Students for their academic activities.

District Residency Program for MD Physiology:

During the three months DRP posting, DRP physiology postgraduates from various universities are posted here and they engage in academic activities like seminar, journals Practical teaching sessions and research activities. DRP log book detailing daily/weekly activities and observations are made by them.


Electives for Phase III MBBS Students:

As per CBME guidelines the department of physiology conducts electives for the Phase III MBBS Students under the following modules


  • Lung Function Test- Spirometry Interpretation (5 Students)
  • Harvard Step Test- Fitness Index (5 Students)
  • Electrocardiogram- Basic Principle and interpretation (5 Students)

The students get hands on training in utilization of various equipment’s and clinical data interpretation during the electives.

01.07.2025 Glands of Grace – An endocrine Symphony An intra college competition for first year MBBS Students comprising of various segments including short film making, Debate, Fancy Dress, Model & Charts Making, Rangoli, Mimicry, Canvas Painting and Monoact on the topic Endocrine Physiology.

The Department of Physiology also periodically conducts intra college Quiz competition “SUPERNOVA”. The winners of this intra college quiz competition represent the Institution in the State Association of Physiologists of Tamil Nadu (APT) Intercollege Quiz Competition conducted annually across various medical colleges in Tamil Nadu.
