Introduction

Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvallur stretches along Chennai – Tirupati Highway and nearby Chennai – Bangalore National Highway.



This is the only tertiary eye care facility with NABH accreditation catering population of about 37 lakhs from 3 districts of Tamil Nadu and border areas of Andhra Pradesh.



Greater extent of Paediatric and Elderly Population, in and around Thiruvallur district are referred to this Hospital which offers an established and dedicated services, where all the primary stabilization and emergency services are implemented following standard procedures in accordance with evidence-based protocol.

Scope of services

From the outset, Department of Ophthalmology offers all inclusive comprehensive eye care for:


ANTERIOR SEGMENT DISORDERS


Blepharitis, Conjunctivitis, Stye, Chalazion, Keratitis(infectious\Exposure),Pterygium, Pinguecula, Episcleritis and Scleritis.


DISEASES OF EYELID\ADNEXA


Ptosis, Entropion\Ectropion, Lid tumors\Cysts, Dacryocystitis\Dacryoadenitis,Preseptal\Orbital Cellulitis


REFRACTION\OPTICAL ISSUES


Refractive errors, Amblyopia, Spectacle related complications


CATARACT\LENS DISORDERS


Senile cataract, Developmental\Paediatric cataract, Posterior capsular Opacification, Post cataract surgery complications.


GLAUCOMA


Primary Open angle Glaucoma(POAG), Primary angle-closure Glaucoma(PACG), Secondary glaucoma, Glaucoma suspects.


UVEA


Anterior Uveitis, Intermediate\Posterior\Pan-Uveitis and Syndromic Uveitis.


NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY


Papilledema, Optic Neuritis, Cranial nerve palsies, Nystagmus and Visual field defects,


RETINA


Regular fundus monitoring
Management of Diabetic Retinopathy, Age-related Macular Degenration With Anti- Vegf Injections- Bevacizumab, Ranibizumab
Pars plana vitrectomy in case of Vitreous haemorrhage or Tractional Retinal Detachment.
Close Monitoring With FFA, OCT, B-scan & Visual Field Testing.
Laser Photocoagulation in Ischemic areas.

Undergraduate MBBS teaching programs


  • Our Department conducts theory and practical demonstration classes for Second year and Pre final year MBBS Students as per NMC Medical education unit guidelines.
  • Our Government Tiruvallur Medical College, Tiruvallur has 100 Undergraduate seats each academic year starting from 2022.
  • In the morning, In OPD and Wards we are facilitating undergraduate students as per NMC guidelines. As per COMPETENCY BASED UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM, we provide education and clinical skill knowledge through various means for Prefinal\ final year
  • Early Clinical Exposure (ECE) is a learning tool that provides medical students with practical experience in healthcare setting and early onset in their studies
  • Competency-based curriculum: The curriculum is designed to help students develop competencies in working in a healthcare team, practicing medicine, and more
  • Clinical classes held for prefinal\Final year where proper schedule is based on Curriculum including case discussion, self directed learning and small group teaching.
  • A summative assessment is made at the end of session testing their competency skills which helps in strengthening their weak areas.
  • Theory classes are held regularly every month for prefinal years based on CBME curriculum that includes OPHTHALMOLOGY \ procedural skillS\AETCOM modules/ Integration topics.

District Residency Program (DRP) for Post graduates:


DRP Post graduates posted in our Department are trained under subject specific learning objectives. This will be dealt with under the following headings:


  • Theoretical knowledge (Cognitive domain)
  • Practical and clinical skills (psychomotor domain)
  • Attitudes including communication skills (Affective domain)
  • Writing thesis / Reviewing Research activities (Scholarly activity)
  • Training in Research Methodology (Practice based learning, Evidence based practice)
  • Case Presentation- Once a week in the ward and in Outpatient department
  • Seminars- Once a week on every Wednesday
  • Journal club- Once a week on every Saturday
  • Academic grand ward rounds- Twice a week presentation of cases by residents and clinically applicable discussions
  • Quality of training are monitored by log books, supportive supervision and continuous assessment of performance.
