OBSTETRICS-AND-GYNAECOLOGY

Introduction
  • Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvallur situated along the Chennai – Tirupati National Highway and close to Chennai – Bangalore National Highway with surrounding SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Sriperumbudur, is the only tertiary care center with NABH Accreditation and LAQSHAYA certified, catering to the population of about 37 lakhs. As the only tertiary care hospital in the region, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Government Medical College Hospital Thiruvallur plays a crucial role in providing specialized care to high-risk obstetric and gynecological cases. These cases are often referred from nearby government hospitals, where resources or expertise might be limited for complex or critical situations. The hospital is a dedicated CEMONC centre, and offers ZERO DELAY services to ensure quicker services to the incoming patients. On a monthly basis, the department handles more than 700 deliveries, which includes normal deliveries, instrument-assisted deliveries, and caesarean sections.
  • Additionally, the department conducts over 500 surgeries per month, covering both emergency and elective cases, which demonstrates its capacity to manage a high volume of patients requiring surgical intervention. The department also runs exclusive cancer screening, menopause, Gynaec endocrine, adolescent health and infertility clinics. The department is well-equipped with the latest medical technology, ensuring that it can provide the best care possible. It performs both emergency and elective surgeries, including the minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries, which offer quicker recovery times for patients. This adds a level of sophistication and precision to the hospital’s offerings, making it an important center for advanced care in obstetrics and gynecology. At present only a few District Residency Programme MS Obstetrics & Gynecology Post Graduates from nearby Institutions are posted to the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, which is not in a regular basis.

Infrastructure
  • The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Thiruvallur Medical College is a well-established, state of-the-art facility dedicated to providing comprehensive maternal and gynecological care. The department is organized across multiple floors within the building, ensuring efficient service delivery for a wide range of health needs, from antenatal care to specialized gynecological treatments. It features two exclusive blocks: one for Maternal and Child Health and another for Gynecology services, ensuring a clear focus and streamlined care.

  • The ground floor of the department hosts a variety of essential services to support both routine and emergency care. These include a reception area, a waiting area, and a one-stop room. Additionally, the ground floor houses critical areas like the Zero Delay Casualty for emergency care. The department also has a well-equipped laboratory for necessary medical tests, and an Outpatient Department (OPD) dedicated to antenatal care, family welfare, and gynecology consultations. For prenatal monitoring, the ground floor also includes an ANC USG room and an immunization room.

  • The first floor is dedicated to the care of newborns and mothers. It features a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for critically ill or premature newborns, a PREM unit for premature and low-birth-weight infants, and a Human Milk Bank to provide essential breastfeeding support. The second floor houses important facilities for labor and delivery, including a waiting area, a USG room, a well-equipped labor ward, and a High Dependency Unit (HDU) for mothers who require intensive monitoring during and after delivery. The third floor focuses on post operative care. It contains a maternity operation theater (OT) for elective and emergency purposes.

  • The fourth floor is dedicated to antenatal care, with another OT for gynecological surgeries and family planning surgeries. The fifth floor features a blood bank to support the department’s extensive surgical and emergency care needs, as well as a postnatal ward. The department provides round-the-clock maternity care with well-equipped labor wards, emergency OTs, and zero-delay services to ensure swift and comprehensive care for patients.

  • The OPD at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is organized to provide specialized care on dedicated days. These include clinics for high-risk pregnancies, menopause, gynecological endocrine disorders, adolescent health, and infertility. In addition to regular antenatal follow-ups and gynecology consultations, a cancer screening clinic operates six days a week to facilitate early detection and timely intervention for gynecological cancers. Each specialized clinic is closely monitored by the Head of the Department and an Assistant Professor, ensuring consistent and high-quality care. The department has a bed strength of 180, with an occupancy rate consistently above 95%. This high occupancy rate demonstrates the department's capacity to handle a large number of patients while maintaining high standards of care.
