Introduction
  • Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvallur situated along the Chennai – Tirupati National Highway and close to Chennai – Bangalore National Highway with surrounding SIPCOT Industrial Estate in Sriperumbudur is the only tertiary care centre with NABH Accreditation catering to the population of about 37 lakhs.
  • Most of the road traffic accident victims from the above national highways are referred to this Hospital which has an established Emergency Department where all the primary stabilisation as well as emergency orthopaedic and general surgeries are done as per the TAEI protocol within 6 hours.
  • Dept of General Surgery at Govt Medical College Hospital, Thiruvallur is a well- established department in the Hospital with all the faculty and infrastructure facilities doing all types of emergency trauma surgeries as well as other major surgeries like splenectomy, laparotomies, appendicectomy, amputation, blunt trauma and septic cases.
  • The department has a well- equipped Operation Theatre with laminar airflow. The Hospital also has adequate infrastructure with MRI and CT scan in the Radiology department with a fully functional established Central Lab doing all biochemical, pathological and microbiological investigations.
  • The Department of General Surgery is a fully equipped, well-structured, and modern surgical unit located in the heart of the hospital, with facilities designed to provide comprehensive patient care, education, and research. The department is committed to offering a blend of clinical exposure, specialized surgical services, and cutting-edge surgical techniques for post-graduate students, making it an ideal setting for advanced surgical training.

Infrastructure

The Department is housed in a dedicated section of the hospital, featuring state-of-the-art equipment and facilities designed to meet the highest standards of surgical care and education:


Laminar Airflow Operation Theatre Complex:

The department boasts an exclusive Laminar Airflow Operation Theatre (O.T.) complex located on the 5th floor of the main block. The complex is equipped with two specialized cubicles and four operating tables, ensuring optimal sterile conditions and efficiency in conducting complex surgeries. The theatres are further supported by Ultrasound (USG) machines, Endoscopy, and Colonoscopy machines for diagnostic and intraoperative purposes.


Outpatient Clinics (OPDs):

The department operates a well-established Outpatient Clinic, located on the 1st floor of the main block. It includes separate male and female OPDs to accommodate diverse patient needs and provide personalized care. The OPDs handle a variety of routine and specialized consultations, enhancing the clinical training experience for postgraduate students.


Ward and ICU Facilities:

The Department's inpatient facilities consist of exclusive Male and Female General Surgery Wards, located on the 4th floor of the main block, with a total bed strength of 150 beds. These wards are equipped for the management of both elective and emergency surgical cases, providing a diverse range of clinical exposure for trainees. The Surgical ICU, situated on the 6th floor, offers 10 dedicated beds, equipped with all necessary life-saving equipment for intensive monitoring and care of critically ill surgical patients.

Scope of services

The department actively runs specialized clinics for comprehensive patient care and provides postgraduate students with exposure to various sub-specialties: Breast Clinic: Focuses on the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of breast diseases, including cancer and benign conditions.


  • Pediatric Surgery Clinic: Dedicated to the surgical management of pediatric surgical conditions,offering hands-on learning in the care of children with surgical needs.

  • Podiatric Clinic: Specializes in the surgical care of conditions affecting the feet and lowerextremities, with a focus on diabetic foot care, trauma, and deformities.

  • Diabetic Clinic: Provides integrated care for diabetic patients requiring surgical intervention,including limb salvage surgeries and management of diabetic complications.

  • Endoscopy and Colonoscopy: The clinic offers both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopyservices, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy) and colonoscopy, providingpostgraduates with exposure to minimally invasive procedures.

  • Minor Procedures and Dressings: The OPD also caters to minor surgical procedures, wounddressings, and post-operative follow-ups, ensuring the continuous learning of fundamentalsurgical skills.


EMERGENCY AND TRAUMA CARE

The Department of General Surgery plays a pivotal role in the hospital's 24/7 emergency trauma care services. The duty surgeon provides immediate care to patients in the Emergency Department, handling a wide range of life-threatening surgical emergencies.

  • Laparotomies for Splenic Injury
  • Perforated Abdominal Viscera (e.g., perforated gall bladder, bowel perforation)
  • Amputations (trauma and gangrene cases)
  • Wound Debridement

  • Trauma-Related Surgeries (including fractures, soft tissue injuries)

The department’s emergency trauma services ensure postgraduates receive real-time exposure to high pressure situations, fostering skill development in quick decision-making, surgical techniques, and patient management in critical conditions.

Academic activities

The Department is committed to providing high-quality education and training in General Surgery, following the NMC's guidelines for postgraduate medical education. The department offers a rich clinical experience, supported by theoretical lectures, workshops, and seminars, aimed at producing competent, skilled, and compassionate surgeons. Postgraduate trainees benefit from hands-on experience across various subspecialties, as well as guidance from a team of highly qualified faculty members.


  • Clinical Exposure: Students actively participate in surgeries, patient management, and rounds across both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Research and Academics: The department encourages research initiatives and offers the resources necessary for students to engage in scholarly activities.
  • Workshops and Training: Regular workshops on advanced surgical techniques, such as laparoscopicsurgeries, minimally invasive procedures, and surgical skills training, are held.

Our Department of General Surgery facilitates teaching of

  • Undergraduate MBBS students
  • C.R.M.I from Foreign Medical graduates
  • District Residency Program Post graduates from various Government and Private medical colleges and Institutions
  • Nursing students and Allied Health students.

Our Department of General Surgery conducts theory and practical demonstration classes for Second year and Pre final year MBBS Students as per NMC Medical education unit guidelines.Our Government Thiruvallur Medical College, Thiruvallur has 100 Undergraduate seats each academic year starting from 2022.


In the morning, In OPD, Wards and Operation theatre we are facilitating Early Clinical exposure as per NMC guidelines for Second year and prefinal year students as per COMPETENCY BASED UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM. We provide education and clinical skill knowledge through various means from first year to final year.


Early Clinical Exposure (ECE) is a learning tool that provides medical students with practical experience in a healthcare setting early in their studies.


The curriculum is designed to help students develop competencies in working in a healthcare team, practicing medicine, and more.


2 weeks Clinical classes are held in second and prefinal year where proper schedule is based on Curriculum including case discussion, self directed learning and small group teaching. A summative assessment is made at the end of session testing their competency skills which helps in strengthening their weak areas.


Theory classes are held regularly every month for prefinal years based on CBME curriculum that includes general surgery & procedural skills, AETCOM modules , Integration topics.


C.R.M.I. from Foreign Medical Graduates

In our Government Medical College and Hospital, CRMI from Foreign Medical Graduates are posted after completing their Foreign Medical Graduate Examination for past 2 years witheach academic year approximately 100 CRMI graduates. We are teaching basic clinical exposure and hands on training to all the posted CRMIs to enable them to diagnose and treat common surgical emergency and electives. Each CRMIs aretrained to have ability to diagnose and treat trauma and surgical cases.

  • ICU Care
  • Dressing
  • Wound debridement
  • Suturing

District Residency Program Post graduates As per Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2000 (PGMER-2000) vide notification dated 16.09.2020, Post graduate students in various Government and Private Medical Colleges in their second year are posted in New Medical colleges, District Headquarters Government Hospitals and Taluk Hospitals. In our Government Medical College and Hospital, Thiruvallur, District Residency Program Post Graduates are regularly posted for the past two years from various Government and Private Medical Colleges.


All the DRP Post graduates posted in our Department are trained under subject specific learning objectives. This will be dealt with under the following headings:


  • Theoretical knowledge (Cognitive domain)
  • Practical and clinical skills (psychomotor domain)
  • Attitudes including communication skills (Affective domain)
  • Writing thesis / Reviewing Research activities (Scholarly activity)
  • Training in Research Methodology (Practice based learning, Evidence based practice)

  • Teaching skills

All the DRP PGs are involved in the following academic activities:

  • Case Presentation- Once a week in the ward and in Outpatient department
  • Seminars- Once a week on every Friday
  • Journal club- Once a week on every Saturday
  • Academic grand ward rounds- Twice a week presentation of cases by residents and clinically applicable discussions

Quality of training is monitored by log books, supportive supervision and continuous assessment of performance.

CASE 1- CANCER SURGERY (MARCH-2025) /56/M Carcinoma transverse colon/ Extended left hemicolectomy done

Patient presented with altered bowel habits for six months. Investigations revealed transverse colon mass. Colonoscopic biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma. Proceeded with extended left hemicolectomy. Post op uneventful. Patient referred for chemotherapy.

CASE 5- EMERGENCY SURGERY (MARCH-2025) /54/M Assault/ Stab injury chest/ Diaphragmatic injury/ laprotomy with defect closure

Patient presented with history of multiple stab injuries and left hypochondrial pain. Patient was resuscitated and investigations revealed diaphragm injury with herniation of abdomen contents.Emergency laprotomy with defect closure done.Case done under CMCHIS.
