Introduction
  • Forensic medicine and toxicology is a core subject included in the prefinal year M.B.B.S Curriculum.
  • This subject teaches the UG students about the value of medical ethics in medical practice and importance of medicolegal aspects in all medical subjects.
  • This subject guides the students about Medicolegal documentation and proper handling of Medical records.

Infrastructure
  • The department is located on the second floor of the Faculty Block of the Medical college.
  • It includes well equipped lecture halls for teaching , rooms for all faculty members, Office space, Library and Records room, forensic museum and a demonstration hall.
  • It includes a well constructed Mortuary block in the Hospital premises with all necessary facilities.
Scope of services
  • Undergraduate teaching
  • Conduct of Medicolegal Autopsies and Viscera Despatch.
  • Examination of accused in Medicolegal cases.
  • Issuance of Narcotic Opinion.
  • Clinical Age estimation
  • Expert Medical and Forensic opinion.
  • DNA case sample collection for Disputed paternity , identity and POCSO cases.
  • Evidence Deposition in court for Medicolegal cases.
  • Examination in Civil matrimonial disputes.
Academic activities
  • The Department functions daily from 10am to 4.00pm, on all days.
  • Regular teaching includes UG theory and practical sessions, Seminars and case discussion, hands-on training in autopsy and Medicolegal Documentation, Clinical Forensic Medicine.
  • UG Student research guidance and ICMR projects.
  • Clinical society meetings.

  • The above activities are conducted in accordance with NMC Guidelines as stipulated for Under Graduate teaching Institutes.
  • Every year around 100 FMG CRMI, DRP(12-15) Post Graduate Students of FMT, undergo clinical exposure and academic orientation in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology.
  • The department plays a key role in enhancing the clinical acumen , ethical sensitivity and legal awareness thereby preparing them for real world Medicolegal challenges in clinical practice.
