Community Medicine

Introduction
Responsive Image
  • The Department imparts training in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Management, and Social and Behavioral sciences thereby preparing the undergraduate medical students to address the health needs of populations with evidence-based and socially responsive approaches to be ‘PHYSICIANS OF FIRST CONTACT’.
  • Our department bridges the gap between primary and tertiary healthcare by integrating community-based services with hospital-based care. Through outreach programs, health camps, urban and rural health training centers, and institutional collaborations, we ensure a continuum of care that reflects real-world public health needs.
  • We coordinate and monitor the MTM (Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam) program, aligned with National Health priorities in screening Non communicable Diseases and preventing their complication.
  • The department also coordinates Tobacco Cessation Centre(TCC) within the hospital, providing counseling, behavioral interventions, and pharmacotherapy to help patients quit tobacco use along with supporting departments
  • In addition, the department actively co-ordinates “Organized Cancer Screening Programmes” in our hospital, with a focus on early detection and prevention of common cancers such as breast, cervical, and oral cancer. These screening initiatives are carried out through coordinated efforts at the community level and within the hospital, emphasizing health education, risk assessment, and timely referral and follow-up care.
  • The Department of Community Medicine is dedicated to promote health, preventing disease, and improving the quality of life for individuals and communities through a robust foundation in epidemiology, health systems, and preventive care.
