Introduction

The Department of Anatomy at Government Medical College, Thiruvallur, serves as a cornerstone of foundational medical education. As a vital pre-clinical department, we are committed to delivering in-depth knowledge of human anatomy through a combination of traditional dissection-based learning and modern educational tools.


We provide comprehensive training covering key areas such as Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Osteology, Surface Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Regional anatomy, Radiological and sectional anatomy, Genetics and Clinical Anatomy.


The department is equipped with a spacious dissection hall, well-furnished histology laboratory, museum, and advanced teaching aids that enhance student learning and engagement along with opportunities for research.


Our dedicated faculty members are passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals. In addition to undergraduate teaching, the department encourages student involvement in academic projects and interdisciplinary activities that strengthen anatomical understanding and clinical relevance.

The Department of Anatomy at Government Medical College, Thiruvallur is equipped with modern and student-friendly infrastructure that supports effective teaching, hands-on learning, and academic excellence. Dissection Hall:


A spacious, well-ventilated dissection hall with individual cadaver stations, stainless steel dissection tables, wash areas, and proper lighting. The facility is equipped with cadaver storage and preservation units, including formalin tanks and a cadaver cooling chamber, ensuring hygienic and ethical dissection practices.


Histology Laboratory:


A well-equipped lab with high-quality microscopes for each student, slide preparation tools, stained slide collections. The lab facilitates microscopic study of tissues and organs, helping students correlate structural features with physiological functions.


Anatomy Museum:


The museum houses an extensive collection of anatomical specimens, embryological models, osteology exhibits, charts, and 3D models. It provides a visual and tactile understanding of human anatomy for students.


Demonstration Room:


Fully furnished demo room with audiovisual aids like LCD projectors, whiteboards, and sound systems. These are used for small-group teaching, seminars, and interactive sessions.


Research and Seminar Room:


A dedicated space for faculty and students to engage in academic discussions, presentations, and departmental research activities.


Faculty Rooms and Department Office:


Well-furnished cabins for faculty members with computer access, internet connectivity, and resource materials. The departmental office is equipped with administrative support and record-keeping facilities.


Library Resources:


Access to standard anatomical textbooks, atlases, and reference material, to support self-directed learning and research.

Scope of services

The Department of Anatomy at Government Medical College, Thiruvallur offers a wide range of academic and support services integral to undergraduate medical education and foundational biomedical sciences.

Undergraduate Medical Teaching:

  • Comprehensive facilitation in Gross Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Osteology, Surface Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Regional anatomy, Radiological and sectional anatomy, Genetics and Clinical Anatomy for Phase 1 MBBS students through lectures, dissections, practicals, and small-group sessions.
  • Cadaveric Dissection Training: Ethical, hands-on dissection experience for students, enabling in-depth understanding of human body structure.

Paramedical and Allied Health Sciences Teaching: The department provides anatomy teaching for paramedical and allied health science programs, including certificate course for

Tailored academic content, seminars and practical sessions are conducted to meet the specific needs of each course, with a focus on applied anatomy relevant to the respective field.


District Residency Program (DRP) for Post graduates: As per Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2000 (PGMER-2000) vide notification dated 16.09.2020, Post graduate students in various Government and Private Medical Colleges in their second year are posted in various departments of New Medical colleges, District Headquarters Government Hospitals and Taluk Hospitals.


Voluntary Body Donation Program:


The department manages a structured body donation program to support anatomical education and research. Voluntarily donated bodies are used for cadaveric dissection and research, enabling medical and paramedical students to gain hands-on knowledge of human Anatomy. Awareness campaigns and donor registration support are regularly organized to promote ethical body donation in the community.


All procedures are conducted with dignity and in compliance with legal and ethical norms as per Government and NMC guidelines.

Academic activities

Undergraduate Medical Teaching:


The Department of Anatomy conducts academic activities in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) and The Tamil Nadu DR. MGR Medical University guidelines and the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum for Phase 1 MBBS students.


Key academic components include:


  • Competency-Based Teaching: Emphasis is placed on structured, outcome-driven teaching of anatomical competencies, integrating clinical relevance, professionalism, and applied anatomy in alignment with CBME standards.
  • Cadaveric Dissection & Prosections: Students are provided hands-on exposure to human cadaveric dissection and guided prosections to understand three-dimensional human anatomy.
  • Histology Practical Sessions: Regular microscopy-based classes help students identify normal tissues and correlate with theoretical knowledge.
  • Embryology and Radiological Anatomy: Clinical embryology concepts and interpretation of normal imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI) are incorporated into the curriculum to enhance applied understanding.
  • Small Group Teaching & Early Clinical Exposure (ECE): Students participate in interactive small-group discussions and ECE modules to relate anatomical knowledge to clinical practice.
  • Vertical and Horizontal Integration: Collaborative sessions are conducted with other pre-clinical and clinical departments to ensure a holistic and contextual approach to learning.
  • Formative and Summative Assessments: Regular assessments including MCQs, OSPEs, viva-voce, and written exams are conducted as per CBME norms, ensuring continuous feedback and academic progression.
  • Self-Directed Learning (SDL): SDL sessions are integrated to promote independent learning and lifelong learning skills among students.
  • Skill Development and Attitude-Ethics-Communication (AETCOM):Basic procedural skills, along with modules on medical ethics and communication, are introduced early in the curriculum through the AETCOM component.
  • Academic Support and Mentoring: Faculty-guided mentoring for academic assistance, doubt clearance, and early research orientation.

All the DRP Post graduates posted in the Department of Anatomy are trained under subject specific learning objectives.
