Introduction
  • Government Medical College and Hospital, Thiruvallur is the only tertiary care centre for the entire Thiruvallur district and adjacent districts like Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Chengalpet and adjoining border areas of Andhra Pradesh, offering tertiary level Anaesthesiology services
  • Department of anaesthesiology play a very supportive role to both surgical and nonsurgical specialties. We evaluate the patient as a whole and optimise the patient’s condition to the best before a planned surgical procedure
  • We work in good coordination with the critical care team and the surgical team in providing quality care to the patients.
  • We give optimal mental support to the patients pre operatively by good counseling and take care of their safety perioperatively.
  • We provide holistic care for the patients before , during and after the surgery and also provide complete relief from pain and keep patients comfortable.
  • We also do procedures using ultrasonography like POCUS, echocardiography, invasive lines placement and nerve blocks.
  • Our work has always been guided by the needs of the patients and delivered by our combined revolution technology, best medical expertise and advanced procedure .

Infrastructure
  • Our department of anaesthesiology is located in the fifth floor of new block of government medical college hospital where we have our main OT complex with immediate postoperative recovery area ,post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) for delivering elective anaesthesiology services . We have separate operation theatre for emergency general surgical procedures at first floor of new block .our department also includes well functioning CSSD ( Central Sterile Supply Department ) and liquid oxygen plant. We also have department office space for teaching faculty, demonstration room, library facility, museum, skills lab for academic activities.
  • We have a separate 5 storeyed block for maternity and child care where we have facility for providing anaesthesiology service for elective and emergency obstetric and gynaecological procedures

  • Our department of Anaesthesiology has well equipped operation theatres with 23 operating tables with anaesthesia work station , multipara monitors , 20 resuscitation equipments serving various surgical specialties. All the operation theatres are equipped with adequate defibrillators , basic airway gadgets , advanced airway gadgets like video laryngoscope , flexible fiber optic bronchoscopes, ultrasound machine which help us in providing quality anaesthesia care. Our department is also provided with advanced equipments like spirometer used for assessment of pulmonary function and radiofrequency ablator for performing pain alleviation procedures.

  • Our department also has a well equipped post anaesthesia care unit (PACU ) for providing intensive peri operative care and also expert care for high risk peri operative patients . Our PACU is equipped ICU beds which are mechanically or electronically operated along with air mattress, ICU Ventilators integrated with humidifier Multiparameter (8 parameters) , dedicated outlets for oxygen, medical air and vacuum outlets per bed ,Syringe pumps, infusion pumps , Patient warming device, ultrasound machine color doppler and echocardiogram facility, Defibrillator, airway/crash cart , oxygen cylinder, Arterial blood gas analyzer, flexible bronchoscope.
  • We also run preoperative assessment clinic for optimisation of preoperative conditions and pain and palliative care for managing and treating chronic pain conditions

    Undergraduate MBBS Academic Activities

  • Our department of anaesthesiology performs various theory and clinic skill demonstration classes for final year part 1 and part 2 MBBS students as per NMC guidelines.
  • Based on Competency- based under graduate curriculum, we conduct academic sessions including small group teaching ,self directed learning , AETCOM sessions , skill sessions ,for final year part 1 and part 2 MBBS students
  • Formative assessment and summative assessment are done appropriately to assess and improvise the academic profile of this students

    C.R.M.I. from Foreign Medical Graduates
  • Our department of anaesthesiology is providing adequate learning experience and skill training in anaesthesiology to all the CRMI’ s during their two weeks clinical postings

  • Assisting nerve blocks
  • Adult basic life support (BLS) and adult advanced cardiovascular life support ( ACLS ) training session using mannequins at our department skills lab

  • End of the posting assessment was done to assess their learning experience

District Residency Program (DRP) for Post graduates:
  • Post graduate students from various Government and self financing Medical Colleges attended 3 months clinical posting in our institution as per Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2000 (PGMER-2000) vide notification dated 16.09.2020.

  • Bronchoalveolar lavage was done in a 60 years old patient with difficulty in breathing due to lower airway obstruction with mucous plug to relieve the obstruction , using flexible fibreoptic bronchoscope .
